Battle Styles is an expansion and gameplay mechanic in the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) that was first introduced with the Sword & Shield—Battle Styles set, released on March 19, 2021.

🎮 What Battle Styles Is

Battle Styles isn’t just a set — it’s a new way to play Pokémon TCG where certain cards are grouped into two distinct “styles,” each with its own flavour and strategic role. 

🔥 The Two Battle Styles

1. Single Strike Style – Represented with red accents, this style focuses on power and heavy damage.

   • Pokémon and cards with this style often have strong, hard-hitting attacks designed to KO an opponent’s Pokémon quickly. 

2. Rapid Strike Style – Marked with blue accents, this style emphasises technique, speed, and versatility.

   • Rapid Strike cards often perform sneaky or technical attacks, such as attacking multiple times or switching Pokémon, allowing for more tactical play.

🃏 How It Changes Gameplay

• Pokémon, Trainer, and Energy cards can all have a Battle Style tag, giving decks a cohesive theme.

• Cards of the same Battle Style often synergise with each other, encouraging players to build decks centred around either power (Single Strike) or precision (Rapid Strike).

• The mechanic doesn’t introduce special new rules — Battle Style cards still follow normal TCG rules — but their abilities and energies support their chosen style’s strategy.

📦 The Battle Styles Set

• The expansion features over 180 cards, including Pokémon V, Pokémon VMAX, Trainer cards, and Special Energies.

• The set highlights Pokémon like Urshifu V and Urshifu VMAX in both Single Strike and Rapid Strike variants — showcasing the thematic split in playstyles.

Battle Styles brought greater strategic depth and deck diversity to the Pokémon TCG by giving players clear thematic options — either overwhelming force or calculated precision — when building and battling with their decks.
